Sailing Blows all the Bad Stuff Away

Updated: Jun 11, 2022

I’ve been saying this for a long time, and finally someone did a scientific study and proved my theory – Sailing Blows All the BAD Stuff Away!

Last month I helped new boat owners deliver their catamaran from Key Biscayne northward along Florida’s Atlantic coast. The weather was perfect for our mission, about 10-15 knots of wind out of the east which made our sail a perfect beam reach – we never had to tack once!

A few hours into our 10 hour trip I found myself in the midst of Blue Space, that dreamy area that separates one from the pressures and distractions of everyday life and all the bad stuff.

As I looked around at my relaxed and quietly introspective crewmates, I realized that Blue Space is real! It’s been confirmed by Dr. Wallace Nichols, author of the book Blue Mind. He says just looking at water can trigger feelings of wellness, compassion, empathy and happiness. And being on the water is even better! The sound of the water induces relaxation and our stress hormones dip, the distractions of life are few. Also, family relationships deepen naturally when on the water – you’re in a small space with your loved ones and forced to look at each other and interact. No texting each other from bow to stern! We become better listeners, both to the ocean and to each other, and converse more easily as the distractions float away.

So, I’m thinking a boat is medicine and should be included in the company’s health care package? One day, maybe….
